Today’s nails: in the navy!

Ahh…TGIF! I’m one of those lucky people who have Fridays off, and today I finally had some time to do something new to my nails: striping tape art 🙂

Recently I got different colours of striping tape from the amazing Born Pretty Store (seriously the best online store for nail art props!), and I’d been trying to figure out how to use it in a design…and in comes the equally amazing Barry M!

When I was in Scotland a couple of weeks back, I went straight to the closest store carrying Barry M nail polish as I adore that brand! One of the shades I got was ‘Navy’. It’s exactly that, a rich, creamy shiny navy. One coat could do the trick, but I did two anyway to get a really swanky look.

Then the slightly tricky bit. In the Nail Dummy (and my personal) style, I like to keep things sleek and clean, so luckily I already decided to do a simple horizontal band using a swanky gold colour. Saves some time and frustration, as it’s quite a precise little project to get the tape on straight 😉

Basically, roll off some tape and position it over the nail once the polish is really dry. No really dry, so paint them first, have a drink, have some dinner, and only then start taping, or you will regret it…
Once it’s on kind of straight, take your thinnest pair of nail scissors and cut off. Then, tuck in the tape down the sides of your nail and cut off any bits that are still too long. You want a very snug fit as otherwise you might accidentally peel off the tape!

After finishing each nail, I instantly painted on a coat of fast drying top coat, also to seal it in better.

All in all, it’s not complicated, and I love the result, nice and chic 🙂

Today’s nails: playing around with reds

Red nails in different styles

Soooooo the husband’s out of town, I’m home alone eating a microwave meal, thinking of what to do…oh what the heck, let’s just practice some different nail art techniques!

I couldn’t decide what to do, so I first chose 2 base colours: Catrice ‘Bloody Mary to Go’, a nice deep red, and Catrice ‘Papa don’t Peach’ – indeed, a bright peach colour. Continue reading

Today’s nails: taped mani, Queensday style

20130430-013521.jpg

Hey all! Today’s a big day in The Netherlands, where I live: it’s the last Queensday for a (probably) very long time! Our current Queen Beatrix is stepping aside to let her son Willem-Alexander become the first king in over a century. And that all on Queensday, the day we traditionally go out in the country’s colours orange, red, white and blue to celebrate her birthday. From next year, Kingsday will be on tge 27th so lots of reasons to have a big party today!

I’ll be going out in the city with husband and friends, and of course the nails couldn’t stay behind! It’s not my best work to be honest, but for a relatively quick job it looks great for the day.

I gave myself a double coating of a bright orange from Sephora. Then, using striping tape, chose random nails to paint flags on. As it has 3 layers it will save you some time if you try not to be perfect, but to only stripe the red and blue and carefully colour in the white bits without tape.
As soon as the polish has set a bit, throw on some fast drying top coat. Fijne Koninginnedag!

Today’s nails: a little bit of everything with a crackle

crackle nailpolish

A few days ago I promised to do a more special manicure this week. I’d been thinking loads on what to do, as I’ve seen so many great ideas lately. I wanted to also draw inspiration from something real and current, which today is spring in The Netherlands. And that means colourful fields of tulips! But tulip fields alone on my nails isn’t exciting enough, so I’m adding some rebellious crackle to it. Continue reading

Leopard and stripes, why stick to one design if you can have ’em all?

Leopard stripes

The idea came from looking around on Pinterest; I saw someone who’d collected several examples of ladies doing a couple of nails with a leopard print, and a couple with several stripes but all in the same colour story. I thought it looked amazing, so decided to give it a go, adding in a few twists. First, I only just started out using tape to stripe my nails, so opted for one wide band rather than several smaller stripes. And I felt like playing with glitter a bit, I’ve this (here we go again, sponsor me already haha) Nails Inc. rose coloured glitter which is deliciously amazing, I’d been wanting to use it again for a while. Anyway, on to how I did it! Continue reading

Taped mani attempt #1: royal purple and gold

purple and gold nail art

OK so I’m nearly done posting my progress ‘pre-blog’. Next week, when I do my nails again (I’m still loving the blue nails I did, see my first blog entry) I’ll start taking more pics while I’m painting my nails. And then you’ll see the royal mess I make! I have no intention of acting as if I can do perfectly manicured nails without painting half my hands as well 🙂

Speaking about royal, out here in The Netherlands excitement is growing by the day as our current Queen Beatrix is stepping aside on April 30, to make way for her son Willem-Alexander. As I’m in Amsterdam, I’m already often bumping into cars from the royal family and staff, probably there to inspect the sites for the big day. I’ll be doing a special mani ready for this day consisting of the Dutch flag colours red, white, blue and royal colour orange, but long story short, all this royal talk got me in the mood for doing something in typical royal purple and gold. A very classy combination of colours indeed! At the same time, my sticky tape was looking at me as if it were saying ‘go on then, you know it’s time to do a real taped manicure?’. And yes, I did fancy practicing my taping skills, so here goes. Continue reading
